How Long Should an Appliance Last?
Published June 13, 2022 by Manuel Escobar
You’ve just purchased an appliance, great! Now you can begin enjoying its features, but how long will it last? Like most products, appliances also have a specific amount of time before they become inoperable. Though it always varies per appliance, most of them generally have a long lifespan.
So, if your appliance looks a little old, don't rush to get a new one! You might be surprised to learn how long your appliances can last.
One of the most important appliances in any house is the refrigerator, it’s hard to imagine life without them! It keeps your food at the ideal temperature and helps prevent food from going bad when compared to just leaving them out. Refrigerators are built to last since they go through a lot of wear and tear, especially around a large family.
As long as they are generally well maintained, they tend to last about 13 years and might even last a little longer in the right conditions. However, with any refrigerator, you can expect common issues to occur such as a blocked ice/water dispenser or temperature issues. Luckily, manufacturer warranties typically help cover most issues.
Washers & Dryers
Laundry might not be your favorite chore, but our washers and dryers make it a breeze with several great features. Like the refrigerator, it’s hard to imagine doing laundry without these appliances in our lives. Washers and dryers have been innovated in so many ways that laundry can actually be fun.
Even with their complex mechanics and constant use, a washer can last 10 years, while a dryer can go as far as 13 years. If you don’t overfill them, run them more than they should be, or constantly avoid warning signs of damage, they’ll have a happy life. If you have a smart washer or dryer, they usually have an app to download that also helps track issues and gives maintenance notifications to better care for them.
Every kitchen appliance is used nearly daily in any given house, especially ranges. A range can bring a family together at any time of the day, especially with a killer dish. Ranges have come a long way from just being an appliance that cooks food.
There are so many different models and features that it may seem difficult at times to guess how long it’ll stay operable. Thankfully, most ranges have a life expectancy of 13 years. Like all appliances on this list, if they’re treated just right, they may even last a little longer and push towards 15 years or so.
After a long tiring day at work, followed by a large dinner, nothing feels better than a helping hand from your dishwasher. Who wants to clean a large pile of dishes anyways?
Dishwashers have come a long way from what they used to be, some being able to hold up to 16 place settings. That can be as many as 160 dishes in total! Even with daily use, a dishwasher should be able to last you around 9 years. Again, like the rest of these appliances, it might last a little longer if not used every day but well maintained by checking for the build-up and other debris to help preserve its life expectancy.
Don’t Rush Your Appliance!
Sometimes, homeowners can get tired or annoyed with how their appliances look on the outside. Any used appliance for several years is definitely going to have marks and wear and tear around it. However, that doesn’t mean it’s in horrible conditions or inoperable. Try not to rush out an appliance just because it “looks” bad on the outside.
Unless it’s destroyed, or visibly broken, every appliance should reach its marked life expectancy.
